The Newfoundland is a dog that impresses with its physical strength and its great activity. The frame is solid everywhere but without giving the dog an apathetic appearance. The head is large, massive, with a stop not too marked. The muzzle is short, square, covered with short, fine hair. The skull-face axes are parallel. The eyes are small, brown, rather sunken. The ears are small, attached well behind and fall well adherent on the head. The body is robust, with perfectly straight and muscular limbs. The tail, of medium length, barely reaches under the hock: it is carried low when the dog is at rest, raised when it is in motion.
