The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a muscular, molossoid, active, flexible dog with great courage and tenacity. The head is short, deep, with a broad skull. The masseters are very pronounced; the stop is marked. The muzzle is short; the nose should always be black. The eyes, preferably dark, round and of medium size, are arranged so as to look straight ahead. The ears can be semi-erect or pink: they must not be large or heavy. The trunk is compact, with a straight upper line, the thorax deep and down, the ribs well arched. The limbs are straight and plump; the front feet slightly deviated. The tail, of medium length, is attached low: wide at the base, it narrows towards the end without curling and retains the shape of the handle of a water pump.
