The Chow Chow is a dog with a strong and compact body, a large head, a broad and flat skull, a short and large muzzle, strong jaws. The stop is not very obvious. The eyes are small, dark and sunken. The ears are small and wide apart and are erect: their position gives the awake dog the expression "scowl" characteristic of the Chow Chow. The tongue is blue-black, the mucous membranes and the palate black. The chest is wide and deep, the back short and straight. The hind limbs have a minimum of angulation at the level of the hock, which gives the dog a typical gait, as if he were walking "on stilts". The tail is tied high and carried inverted, resting on the rump.
